NCS Discipline Code — Statement of Consequences

STATEMENT OF CONSEQUENCES

GENERAL CONSEQUENCES:
The Discipline Code contains a list of possible infractions and consequences. This is not an all-inclusive list and the
administration of Neighborhood Charter School reserves the right to assess actions and behavior which are not on
this list but may be a threat to the safety of students and the school community.
The NCS Discipline Program contains several components:
1. Providing students and parents with information regarding expectations, rules and consequences for
misbehavior.
2. Special assistance for students desiring help in solving their problems, such as Behavior Action Team (BAT)
or school counselor
3. Individual Teacher and/or Administrative Action on infractions of the rules
4. Increased consequences for repeated infractions
5. An informal hearing prior to suspensions
6. A formal hearing and appeal system for expulsion action.
Every attempt will be made to communicate and cooperate closely with parents concerning their child. The
principal or their designee will notify parents by telephone and in writing when their child is suspended, and will
provide, upon request, copies of referrals made to the office by teachers where such copies exist.
Formal appeals of disciplinary action at any level should be processed through the normal chain of command -
teacher, principal, Board of Directors via the Chairman.
Due Process: Neighborhood Charter School will protect the rights of the individual by providing students with
appropriate due process protection. Prior to any student's suspension, unless a student's continued presence might
endanger persons or property or threaten to disrupt the academic process, the student and parent will be provided
with oral and written notice of the charges against the student, an explanation of the evidence if the charges are
denied, and an opportunity to present the student's version of the incident.

SPECIFIC CONSEQUENCES:
IMMEDIATE PICK UP OF STUDENT:
Any “Zero-Tolerance” misbehavior will require immediate parent/ guardian pick up from school. A
conference with the student, teacher, and principal must take place before a student is admitted back into
school.
SUSPENSION:
Suspension is the removal from school for a specified period of time, up to 10 days, for a violation of school
rules. Each day a student is suspended, he/she must make up schoolwork assigned by teacher that is missed.
Parents/ guardians must meet with the principal before re-instatement can occur.
EXPULSION:
Expulsion is removal from school for such a period of time as determined by the Governing Board and during
which the parent must provide or have the APS district provide educational services for students under the
age of 17 years.
